Cleaning Pewter Jewelry Will Boost Its Appearance

Whatever kind of jewelry you have, you should clean it after regularly because Cleaning will boost the appearance of jewelry and will make it long lasting. So as it is with pewter, cleaning pewter jewelry protects it from oxidization and makes it lifelong.

There are numerous ways to clean pewter but I will start from traditional old pewter that included lead which may create dark finish. This dark finish gives an old-fashioned look to pewter jewelry which many makers have tried to copy. This dark patina functions as a protecting shield and if taken away, the layers below it may rust. So while cleaning the old pewter jewelry, care should be taken so that this outer protecting layer is not damaged.

There are many techniques regarding cleaning of pewter, here are few that may be helpful to clean different kinds of pewter jewelry. Polished pewter jewelry is very downy and glossy. It requires to be cleaned for one or two times in a year.

You yourself can easily clean it by applying a paste made with one table spoon of salt, ½cup of floor and a cup of vinegar. Apply the paste for twenty to fifty minutes, at least, and then wash or dry with a clean soft piece of cloth. To remove vivid scratches you can use a polish that may be available at any hardware store. Apply small amount and then wipe it in a circular motion.

You can also clean satin pewter which has a bit rough look. You can clean it while washing it in lukewarm water with gentle soap. Dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth after rinsing it. Satin pewter requires buff once in a year to prevent scratches. You can buff it with superior type of steel wool. Rub it gently on one straight direction.

You must not clean your pewter jewelry in dishwasher that can cause damage. Protect it from acidic foods such as citrus acids otherwise it will get stained or oxidized. Do not use chemical cleaners. Also, do not use cabbage leaves to clean, only use them as scrubbers.Further Reading:
